Comissioned by the Grand Canyon University Wind Ensemble in 2017, this piece takes its name from the noted German theologian and composer Martin Luther. Martin Luther spearheaded the Protestant Reformation and created a great number of the hymns still heard and performed today. “Luther” features Luther’s iconic hymn, "Ein Feste Burg" (also known as “A Mighty Fortress Is Our God”) with a modern twist as well as snippets from other famous works. This work pays homage to a man who in many ways transformed the nature and role of religious music, on this the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation.
