One of the most common things we hear students say when it pertains to general music is “Why do we have to learn this?” or “How is this important?”, or our personal favorite: “I’m not gonna be a musician, so what does this have to do with me?”
Admittedly, they have a point. Most of our charges won’t pursue music voluntarily beyond school. We spend so much time teaching choir, band, and basic music theory that students - and teachers - lose sight of why it’s important to study music in the first place. Music is bigger than all of us; if we want to reach our students, we need to dig deep and address the big picture!
